Charlie Sheen – The Ballhawk

On April 16, 1996 Charlie Sheen became a Ballhawk. In hopes of catching a home run ball he bought out the entire left field section at Anaheim Stadium (now Angels Stadium of Anaheim).

1995_anaheim_stadium2.jpg
Sheen spent around $6500 to buy out the old End Zone seats at Anaheim Stadium for a game vs. the Detroit Tigers. These seats in previous years were also know as the Family or Non-Alcohol section.
Sheen and 2 of his friends spent the entire game in left field in hopes that someone would hit a home run out there. There were two home runs hit during this game one by Mark Parent and the other by Tim Wallach but neither of those balls went into the Left Field stands. Unfortunately Charlie’s attempt at Ballhawking was unsuccessful!
From 1987-1993 I was a regular in this section. We had season tickets out there in 1988 and 1989. I went to a handful of games after moving to California in 1987 and at the first game I went to after moving to Anaheim I grabbed a home run hit by Frank White of the Kansas City Royals. Over the next 6 years I would go on to grab 43 home runs in this section.
In 1988 alone I grabbed 37 game home runs in this section. I am pretty sure that I went to about 70 of the 81 home games in Anaheim during the 88 season. I really miss this old section. These days out in left field you have to deal with the bullpens, a longer distances to the field and a lot of issues that make getting a home run ball there much more difficult than it was back then.
Some of the memorable home runs that I caught out in the old Family Section over the years were Dante Bichette’s 1st Major League home run, Bob Boone’s 100th career home run, Carlton Fisk’s 350th career home run and Dave Winfield’s 450th career home run.
So Charlie anytime you want to get a lesson or two on catching home runs just give me a call I know you have my number now as well as a copy of my book! It would be a pleasure and an honor to go to a game or two with you to try and grab a home run ball!!

Angels vs. A’s – Sept. 28, 2010 – Last night game and BP of the season

A little over a week ago I got back out to LA from Chicago. I have been to 7 games in that time and luckily for me they have all been thanks to FREE tickets. The Angels had a Mexican Heritage Fiesta this past weekend that gave me tickets for the last couple of games with BP this season as well.

So here I will write about Tuesday night and then in the near future, probably when I get back to Chicago, I will write about the rest of the action from the other games.
The gates opened right at 5pm as usual and lately I have been in no hurry to run inside. I took my time getting to my favorite spot and just as I got there I saw another Ballhawk getting his first ball of the day. Shortly after I got in my spot an adult with 4 little leaguers in tow came down. I knew that it was going to be a LOOOOOOONG BP session with them around.
Every ball that came around they were yelling and screaming at the guy who got it. By the time the A’s started taking BP they all had one ball and likely most of them had 2. The thing that kind of ticked me off was the fact that the adult with them seems to think that those of us in the cutouts are obligated to let the kids stand on the ledge. I have no problem with the kids and I generally help them get a ball but the kids were just obnoxious!
Anyway, I didn’t get anything while the Angels hit. Jack Cust was in the cage launching balls to the right field pavilion section and it had me thinking I should have gone up there. I decided to stay in my spot and shortly after 3 close calls it paid off.
DSCF4013.JPG
Ball #3899 was a 4 hopper of the bat of Jack Cust. It was hit just a little to the right of me but with my 1st basemans mitt it was pretty easy to grab.
Ball #3900 came about 10 minutes later when Daric Barton stepped in the cage. He ripped a shot that hit off the wall in foul territory and then richocheted of the wall again close to where I was. I had to figure out the angle and then scoop it up like a first baseman!
Ball #3901 came just after that and it was another Daric Barton hit ball. This one was coming right at me and with no one around I got a little comedic. I stood up on the ledge, waved my arms as if I was calling everyone off and then leaned over the wall and made the grab.

I was just out there having fun tonight. Heckling the people that bring gloves and don’t know how to use it. Helping my new buddy, the 5 star kid (dont know his name), get a ball or two. By the way the 5 star nickname comes from his brother slapping his back with an open hand giving him a 5 star handprint on it.
I even called three balls that went to fellow Ballhawk, Ely! As the balls went up in the air I would yell “That’s all you Ely! Don’t screw it up!” Thankfully he caught them all!
It is sad to see the baseball season end so early here is So Cal. We have become used to having playoffs at one if not both baseball venues. Oh well, this trip was just a nice escape from some personal stuff that I am dealing with.
Stay tuned for the updates on the rest of the games that I went to!!
I also have some big plans for 2011!  I hope to find a Cancer Charity to raise money for through Ballhawking as I did with Baseballs 4 MADD.
So happy Ballhawking to those of you that have a few more games left and the playoffs to come!

2010 MLB All Star Game – Anaheim, CA – 1 ball

DSCF1888.JPGIt was the day we had all waited over 2 years for. The All Star Game had finally returned to Anaheim. After last nights disappointments at the Home Run Derby I was looking forward to All Star Game BP.

I took up my usual spot down the right field line and shortly into AL BP Robinson Cano hit a ball that rolled up to me along the wall. I leaned over and snagged it with my new first basemans mitt.

The kid next to me had no glove and if he did have a glove he would have easily outstretched me for the ball. This would come into play a little bit later. As AL BP went on there was really nothing else close. Ichiro didn’t hit anything near us nor did Big Papi.

DSCF1895.JPGThen it was on to the National League. About 15 minutes into NL BP a ball was hit to the same spot as the Cano ball that I had retrieved earlier. I was excited because this would easily be my second ball of the game. Then it happened, as I leaned over the wall the kid (18 or 19) next to me grabbed my arm and pulled it back. I fought with him as the ball got closer and as it rolled into my glove he grabbed it out of my glove. Yes I know, I know, I am a 40yo guy and he is a 19yo kid, but there are “Ballhawk” ethics here. The one thing you never do is pull on or grab someones arm or glove. Let’s just put it this way, the kid was given a stern warning about the next ball that might come by and he chose to leave the area.

After the fact I did make a comment to ANOTHER CSC SECURITY JACKA$$! He sat there and watched what the kid did. When I made a comment he only said just make sure you don’t fall over the wall. I made a few other remarks and went about my business.

DSCF1900.JPGTowards the end of BP another ball was headed right to me and this CSC SECURITY JERK stuck his foot out and kicked the ball as it was coming towards me. I have two issues with this …. #1 why be such a jerk, really I did nothing wrong and you want to be a jerk!!

#2 what if that ball hits your foot and then either hits me in the face or any one of the other fans that was leaning over the wall? CSC EVENT STAFF SECURITY *** #2 is in the picture on the right!

Ok so I really don’t get that upset but in 2 days I got screwed out of over half a dozen balls by 2 CSC EVENT STAFF SECURITY IDIOTS!!

Oh well, at least I ended up with one ball. Was that the highlight of the day? NO IT WASN’T!

DSCF1901.JPGThe highlight of the day came just before the game as I was walking through the concourse. Who did I see?? S-T-O-P  HAMMER TIME!!!

Obviously you can see that this picture was taken in a hurry. I actual took it on the fly so that might be the reason for the interesting facial look.

It was definitely the highlight of the day. Getting the ball was nice but honestly it is just another ball but with a little prettier logo.

As for the All Star game itself, well it was my 4th All Star game that I had been to and by far it was the most boring ever. It was essentially a pitchers duel. None of the outfielders threw balls into the outfield seats after warming up each inning and it went downhill from there.

During the pre-game performance and national anthem the sound was terrible. They had no big entertainment names. The girl singing the National Anthem was a backup singer from GLEE. Ok Ok so she is not really a back up singer but I don’t watch that show anyway so what does it matter.

It was just really a big let down. I did get to spend time with family and I got to see some friends at the Ballpark that I had not seen in a few months.

I guess all of us “Ballhawks” had great expectations and it wasn’t half of what it could have been. Oh well there is always next year in Phoenix of course it could end up at Dodger Stadium if they move it because of the controversy over the immigration laws.

Stay tuned ….. something pretty cool is being put together and I will have details soon!

DOUBLE DUTY – 10/8/2009 – Dodger Stadium 1st then off to Anaheim

WHAT A DAY FOR BASEBALL IN LA!!!

I am going to put together seperate posts for each game! There is a lot to write about unfortuantely it doesn’t involve me getting any baseballs. BUT WHO CARES!

The freaking Dodgers stuck their hand into a pile of CRAP and pulled out a ROLEX!!

Then after leaving the Dodger game, yes I stayed for the entire game, I ended up in Anaheim just before the start of the 5th inning!

Ok since I did not have a camera with me at all on the 8th I don’t have any pictures for this post and since it has been 10 days since I went to these games and I did not get any baseballs at either park I have given up on writing this entry. Sorry!

It was fun however watching a miraculous win and then seeing the Angels beat the Red Sox.

3 Playoff games in 2 days and 3 WINS!!

Boston vs. Angels – 5/12/09 – Angels Stadium

DSCF0369.JPGI got to the stadium a few hours early to see if I could get some autographs. As usual it was SLOW going for autographs outside. Most of the Red Sox were going around back and down the tunnel so I figured I would go after some more Angels players for my team ball. The only autograph I got on that side was Joe Saunders. Around 3:15 I walked over to where the Red Sox were going in and found out that Dusitn Pedroia signed along with Brad Penny who was driving this nice ride pictured on the right. The amusing part of the day was when Hideki Okajima and his translator came in and made fun of the quite big Brad Penny getting out of this little sports car!

Then it was around to the front of the stadium. It’s been really tough walking around to the front of the stadium because you always walk up and see the memorial to Nick Adenhart. You see so many adults and kids get tears in their eyes and a little choked up. That is a lot of the reason that I am chasing baseballs this season to help MADD and raise money for this great Charity!

DSCF0370.JPG Just a little past 5 the gates opened and I was the first through the gates. It’s really too bad that it doesn’t mean much when I am the first inside because I simply can’t outrun anyone anymore. When I am in the seats and the adreniline starts up that’s one thing but just getting into the stadium I am SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!

DSCF0372.JPGJust about on cue in the first 5-10 minutes Gary Matthews Jr. rips one down the line and lean over the wall and grab it. BALL #1   It really wasn’t that exciting for the next 15 minutes or so. The Red Sox came out to warm up and we had Tim Wakefield throwing in front of us. While the pitchers warmed up there was only a few overthrows and nothing really close to me. Josh Beckett and another pitcher were throwing and at one point Beckett uncorked a wild one and hit a guy right in the chest in the seats. The guy started going nuts telling Beckett he loved him etc. The picture on the left is Wakefield looking at the nutjob while he was yelling at Beckett.

When David Ortiz stepped in I figured there was no chance that anything would come near me because last time in he hit everything to centerfield. He just wasn’t the Ortiz of old that pulled a lot of balls down the line. All of the sudden he launched one about 20 rows up and about 40 feet foul above where I was standing along the wall. I took off running and saw that the other two guys going after it went above where the ball went. The one thing that you learn in Angels Stadium is that if a ball goes into the seats it most likely will roll down quickly. So I ran in about 5 rows under where the ball went into the stands and it rolled right to me. Actually it was moving pretty quick and I barely got the glove down to stop it! BALL#2

That was it until for the next 20-25 minutes. JD Drew who was great last time in only hit a couple of balls into the seats as well as a Varitek and a couple of others. In the last group there was a lefty that hit a ball down the line and right to me. Again I leaned over the wall and scooped it up for BALL #3.

For some reason I had a feeling that I might get game HR #100 on this night. Obviously that didn’t happen but here was my view for the entire game.
DSCF0383.JPG

Unfortunately there wasn’t anything hit anywhere near our section.

Oh well #100 will come sometime ………… soon ……………..I hope ……………maybe!!!

The game ended with the Angels blowing the lead in the late innings. I was right behind the Red Sox dugout and in perfect position to get the final ball from Paplebon as he walked in. Unfortunately for me I did not have on anything Red Sox and that is what he looks for when coming in off the field. He tossed it to a guy about 20 feet to my right. A few mintues later one of the coaches pulled a ball from his pocket and tossed it right to me! Ball #4

After the game while waiting for autographs from the Red Sox players we saw a former Cy Young Award Winner come out the gate. It was Bret Saberhagen who won the Cy Young in 85 & 87 (I think). What a really cool guy, not only did he sign for everyone but he also talked to many of us. I do have a pic of the ball but I have to upload it tomorrow!

That was it for the day but not to bad.

  • 4 balls (3 hit, 1 thrown)

TOTALS ARE UPDATED on the SIDE BAR!!

I am getting really close to getting ball #4900!! That is all balls total caught at professional baseball games over the past 33 seasons!

SIDE NOTE on this Thursdays game: I had planned on making at least the first 2 hours of it and then head to work. Looks like that will not happen ………..Oh well
