Cubs Legend Ron Santo Dead at the Age of 70
Ron Santo spoke of Wrigley Field like this ”I felt like I was walking on air. There was an electricity and an atmosphere that I’d never experienced in my life. Any ballplayer that’s ever played here can tell you about that great atmosphere, and anybody who’s come here to watch a game feels the exact same way.”
11 Years ago today – Sammy Sosa’s 61st HR
It was 11 years ago today that I caught Sammy Sosa’s 61st home run on Waveland Avenue outside of Wrigley Field. As I sit here today I can remember it as if it just happened.
The night before I was at a party about 8 blocks away from Wrigley Field. I had $8 in my pocket and really had no intentions of going to the game. I drove down Kenmore towards Waveland and saw legendary Ballhawk MOE MULLINS standing by his van. I talked to Moe and he asked if I was going to hang around. I told him that it was unlikely and he said that I should hang out.
In the first inning of the game Sosa hit a long fly ball down the left field line and onto Waveland Avenue. There was a trail of at least 100-150 people that ran after the ball. I can remember thinking to myself that the only chance i had at getting a Sosa HR was if it rolled right to my feet. (remember that)
A side story to all of this takes place on the Mississippi Belle II Riverboat Casino in Clinton, Iowa. Knowing that I was a huge baseball fan and that I had caught numerous baseballs at MLB games the staff there would always ask me what I thought a Sosa HR would be worth. My response, “I’ll let you know when I catch one!” That was my response each and every time they would ask. (remember this too)
Onto the 5th inning of the game …….
Sosa steps up to bat, I am now leaning against Moe’s van which was parked near the firehydrant on the corner of Waveland and Kenmore. I am watching a TV that Moe had set up inside. Sosa takes a big swing and immediately you heard the crowd roar. I turned to my right and looked up and saw the ball in flight. I headed between two cars hoping that I had a chance.
There were two guys coming up the street as I came between the cars. I saw the ball hit about 5 feet from the building, hit off of one of those guys shins and then, IT ROLLED RIGHT TO ME!! I had just become one of only 3 people (at that time) to have caught someones 61st HR in a season.
Immediately after I made the grab with my glove I cradled it like a football. A few of the regular Ballhawks and Ballhawk groupies circled me and got me into Moe’s van. I can remember Jeff Idleson from the Hall of Fame coming to look at the ball and taking a few notes on it. I was also interviewed by a couple of reporters as well.
The funniest part of the whole scene was the long line of people that wanted to shake my hand, offer me free dinner at their restaurant or just wanted an autograph. That went on for almost 40 minutes.
At one point someone from WGN came over and wanted to take me into the ballpark to be interviewed on the telecast. When we got up to the press box Bill Murray was leaving and said to me, “Give it back to him (Sosa)”. I then came across a guy that asked if I was the one that caught the ball. I told him yes and he asked if he could check it out. Feeling safe since I was in the press box I decided to let go of the ball. A few minutes later a guy came out of another room and the guy I gave the ball to said, “Hey Chris, check this out, this is the Sosa HR ball!” He tossed it to “Chris” and he checked it out.
It turns out that it was actor Chris O’Donnell. As he was walking out after singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame I asked him to sign my hat. I thanked him for the autograph and he walked away. Just as I was about to walk into the TV booth with Steve Stone and Chip Caray I heard Chris’ voice, “Hey John, can you sign my hat!” Of course I signed it!
By the time the 9th inning rolled around I was standing by the fence of the Budweiser house just hoping that Sosa would not hit ………. SWING AND A LONG ONE . …… so much for that …. #62 flew out of the park, into Moes hands and then he got mauled for the ball.
I had actually talked to a collector on the pay phone by the firehouse a little after getting #61 and he offered me $10,000 for the ball. Now there was another ball out there, what would I get for mine? When I got to the collectors office later that night I heard a voice mail from the guy that ended up with 62. They might be buying both balls and I knew I wasn’t getting $10,000.
I could have given the ball back to Sosa but I had been kind of screwed over by a Cubs minor league team (that I worked for) the season before and decided giving it back was not an option. Not to mention that I was recently divorced and the extra cash would help out. So they offered me $7,500 and it would obviously help me out.
To make a looooong story short I got lucky that day, I was in the right place at the right time and had the baseball gods looking down on me.
Now let’s go back to the part about the Mississippi Belle II Riverboat in Clinton, Iowa. About a week later my mom and I went to the boat. As we walked onto the boat I heard someone radio ahead saying, “He’s here!” We walked into the 2nd deck doors and a few of the dealers that new me gave me a standing ovation!
I was a surreal moment, it was as if a celebrity walked onto the boat. Anyway, they all asked me, “So what was it worth?” I told them $7,500 and I got to share the story about my day with them!
The Sosa HR was and still is one of my greatest catches. Regardless of did he or did he not do steroids I don’t really care. He hit 66 HR’s that season to Big Macs 70. It was a great summer for baseball and I was glad to be a part of it!
There were other things that happened that day and much more that I could have added to the story but I cut it down a bit for the sake of my readers. The complete story is in my BOOK titled “TAKING HOME A PIECE OF THE GAME” — Google it or look it up at AMAZON.COM – only $4.95 + shipping.
8/19/09 – Padres vs. Cubs – Petco Park – 1 Ball
Ok so here is the post on Wednesday nights game that I went to at Petco Park.
I had contacted the Padres Director of Media Relations regarding “Baseballs 4 MADD” and to see if it would be possible to get tickets for the game as well as field access for some photos. I actually sent the email the morning of a game about a week ago that I thought I would be attending and did not get a response. Then about a week later I received a reply.
“Is this something that you would like to do during the next homestand?” they wrote. I emailed them back and said that it would work out perfectly if it was against my hometown Cubs. The only downer was the day before the game I emailed asking where I would pick everything up and they were not able to work out the field pass
When everything was said and done we would have 5 tickets for the family and myself to go to the game at Petco!
I am a big fan of Petco Park. It is a cool place although the areas that you can travel in a straight line after a ball are very limited. The other cool thing is that you get to see bsically ALL of batting practice with the gates opening 2 1/2 hrs before game time.
We got to the park about 2pm on Wednesday and picked up our tickets. The hooked us up with some nice field box seats down the left field line.
From there we had to take the girls to the mall since we had about 2 1/2 hours to kill before the gates opened. We went to an outdoor mall that was about 8 blocks away. The girls shopped for a little while and then we had a late lunch. Around 3:45 we took off and headed over to the ballpark and picked up our parking pass that the MR dept gave us as well. We parked the car and walked back to the park.
I really wish I wouldn’t have left the camera behind otherwise I would have had some more photos to add to this entry.
Anyway, when the gates opened we went down to the “Beach”. About 10 minutes after BP started a lefty launched a ball basically right at me. I was in the right spot to make the grab and then one of the Petco regulars ran over and jumped into me which killed any chance I had of making the catch. I will just say that he is pretty lucky that no other balls were hit out there.
There was one other ball hit to centerfield which proved to be very entertaining. The ball hit and bounced over the wall behind the centerfield fence. It came down right near a garbage can and somehow found its way behind it. There was about 3 kids and one adult going after it. The adult turned out to be another Petco regular and friend of the dick that cut me off earlier.
This guy almost ran over one kid for the ball and then started falling over his own feet. He then grabbed a hold of the garbage can pushing it as he was stumbling around. Meanwhile there is a kid on the other side of the garbage can trying to pick the ball up however he was being pushed by the garbage can as it moved from the guy pushing it.
Finally the guy fell on his face, the garbage can tipped over and the little kid ended up with the ball. The great thing was that the players heard all the noise and by the end of this melee there was about 6 Padres watching the whole thing. Most of them pointing and laughing and telling the guy to quit running over little kids.
Shortly after this the rest of the park opened we headed over towards the left field line and things didn’t get much better there. I did grab BALL # 1 which was slapped foul by a lefthanded hitter, bouncing of a few people and seats and right over to where I was. After that it was all downhill!!
At Petco they have an assinine rule that along the left field line you have to sit in a seat during BP. They say it is for safety however it causes more problems than anything else. The first issue is now you have 4 or 5 people crashing into each other on every ball because they are trying to get in the perfect spot when the ball is hit. The second is as you get up to run to the wall you take your eye off the ball.
On a line drive hit down the line myself and another fan got up and darted out to the same spot on the wall. He missed the ball, it then hit off my arm, past my face and farther into the seats. I went into a short tirade, not on the fan, but on how stupid Petco Parks rule is on fans not being able to stand along the lower left field wall. IT IS JUST F***IN STUPID!!!
Ok so after about 15 minutes of the BS down the line I headed up to the Left Field upper deck. It got even worse there. Alfonso Soriano launched a ball right at me and a jackass with a Cubs jersey on runs into me as I am camped under it to make the catch. About 3 pitches later he hits another one to the same spot and the same MF’er does it again! I didn’t go after him directly but I made sure in talking to TC that everyone heard me when I said if he did it again he would end up in the lower deck! It is one thing if you have position and I am even cool if you make the catch in front of me but if you make contact with me more than once the 3rd time you will pay for it. He was lucky though because he stayed out of the way after that.
Towards the end of BP I couldn’t catch a break. If I went high the balls went to where I was low and vice versa. Just a horrible night!
I had hopes of getting 5-8 balls between Tuesdays game at Dodger Stadium and Weds tilt at Petco and somehow I think I was lucky to walk away with 1.
I guess that is just the way it is sometimes! The better part of this is that I am off work this entire week and I will be hitting at least 5 games! So stay tuned!!
The craziest story of a Game Home Run that I have is ……..
The Dodgers were at Wrigley Field on that day and the wind was blowing in from centerfield. I was out on Waveland Avenue with some of the other ballhawks pretty certain that no game home runs would come out.
In the 4th inning Juan Samuel cracked a home run deep to left field that went into the bleachers. Of course we all know of the Wrigley Field tradition of throwing Home Runs back on to the field if hti by an oppising team. That is exactly what happened with this ball.
But that is where it gets a little crazy…..
One of the regulars in the bleachers just missed the home run and came to the top of the stands by the fence to give us an account of what happened. As he was telling us he pointed up towards the left field family section. Shortly after that I heard a ball hit and I ran after it and scooped it up. I yelled up to him “What the He** was that?” He replied with “The guy just threw the ball back onto the field, 3rd base umpire Doug Harvey picked it up and hurled it out of the ballpark and you got it!”
WOW …… I got a home run ball and it was thrown out of the stadium by the umpire. I am pretty sure that is a Wrigley Field first! I think what is really impressive is that an umpire had an arm that good!
Harvey was one of the best umpires ever to wear the blue uniform and over the past 9 years has missed getting voted in to the Hall Of Fame by the veterans committee by only a handul of votes in 3 different years! He definitely gets my vote!!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? Ron Santo misses the HOF again!
64 Hall of Famers vote each year on the veterans committee and again Santo gets screwed!
